Surf Lessons in Morocco: A Beginner’s Guide to Your First Week

Beginner surf lesson in Morocco: practising the pop-up on the sand

Morocco is one of the best places in Europe’s reach to learn to surf: sunny weather most of the year, warm-enough water, sandy beach breaks and surf lessons that cost far less than in many European destinations. If you are booking your first surf lessons in Morocco, this guide explains what a lesson looks like, how quickly beginners progress, what to pack and how to choose a surf camp.

Why take surf lessons in Morocco?

  • Waves all year: the Atlantic coast near Agadir picks up swell in every season, with smaller waves in summer and more consistent swell from autumn to spring.
  • Beginner-friendly beaches: around Tamraght and Taghazout there are sandy beach breaks such as Devil’s Rock, Crocro and Banana Beach where you can learn safely.
  • Easy to reach: Agadir airport has direct flights from many European cities.
  • More than surfing: sunsets, Moroccan food, yoga and village life fill the time between sessions.

What happens in a beginner surf lesson?

  1. Choosing the spot: your coach checks swell, wind and tide and picks the beach where the waves suit your level that day.
  2. Beach session: a warm-up, then the basics on the sand: how to lie on the board, paddle, pop up and stand, and how to fall safely.
  3. Safety and ocean awareness: how to spot currents, where to sit in the water and basic surf etiquette.
  4. In the water: you start in the whitewater, where broken waves push you along and you practise standing up. Coaches stay close and give feedback after each wave.
  5. Debrief: what went well and one or two things to focus on in the next session.

Most lessons last around two hours in the water. Soft-top foam boards are used for beginners because they float well and are safer.

How fast will I learn?

Everyone progresses differently, but a typical first week looks like this:

  • Days 1 and 2: paddling, popping up and riding whitewater straight towards the beach.
  • Days 3 and 4: standing up more consistently and starting to turn the board a little.
  • Days 5 to 7: catching waves on your own and, on good days, trying small green (unbroken) waves.

Surfing every day for a week makes a big difference compared with occasional lessons, which is why most beginners choose a surf camp package rather than single lessons.

What to pack

  • Swimwear and a rash vest or lycra
  • Reef-safe sunscreen with high SPF, and lip balm
  • A hat and sunglasses for the beach
  • A light jacket or hoodie for evenings, especially from November to March
  • Comfortable clothes for yoga

Boards and wetsuits are included in all PaddleOut Morocco packages, so you do not need your own gear.

How to choose a surf camp in Morocco

  • Group size: smaller groups mean more feedback from your coach.
  • Local knowledge: coaches who grew up surfing the area know which spot works on which day.
  • What is included: check whether lessons, boards, wetsuits, meals and transport to the beaches are part of the price.
  • Location: being close to the beach and to several surf spots gives you more options.
  • Reviews: read recent Google reviews from other beginners.
