A beginner surf camp in Morocco is a week where everything is set up for your first waves: a daily lesson with a coach, a board and wetsuit, transport to a gentle beach, meals and a bed with other surfers. Most first-timers stand up within the first day or two and catch whitewater waves on their own by the end of the week. Here is what to expect, day by day.
Why Morocco is good for learning
- Waves all year. The Atlantic sends swell to this coast in every season, and summer brings smaller waves that suit beginners.
- Soft beach breaks. Around Tamraght there are long sandy beaches where waves break slowly and you can stand in the shallows.
- Warm weather. Even in winter, days are usually sunny and mild.
- Short flights. Agadir is about three to five hours by plane from most of Europe.
- Good value. A full week with lessons, meals and a room costs less than many surf camps in Europe.
Your first day
You arrive, meet the group and the coaches, and get fitted for a board and wetsuit. The first lesson starts on the sand: how to carry the board, how to lie on it, how to paddle and how to pop up to your feet. Then you go into knee-deep water, and the coach pushes you into small whitewater waves so you can practise standing up.
A typical day at surf camp
- Morning: optional yoga on the rooftop, then breakfast.
- 10:00 to 12:30: surf lesson at the beach the coaches pick for the conditions.
- Lunch: on the beach, near the spot.
- Afternoon: free surf, rest, or explore the village.
- Evening: dinner together, sunset on the roof, sometimes a talk on waves and tides.
You can see the full daily schedule on our surf lessons in Tamraght page.
How fast will you progress?
Everyone learns at a different speed, but most beginners follow the same steps:
- Pop up and ride whitewater straight to the beach
- Catch whitewater waves without a push from the coach
- Paddle out past the breaking waves
- Catch an unbroken green wave and ride along it
In four days you can expect to reach step two. In a week, many guests get to step three, and some ride their first green waves. That is why our 7-day surf camp and 6-day surf and yoga retreat are the most popular choices for beginners.
Do you need to be fit?
You do not need to be an athlete. Surfing uses muscles you rarely train, so expect sore shoulders after the first two days. You should be comfortable in the water and able to swim. Yoga in the morning helps with flexibility and with the stiffness after long sessions.
Is it safe?
The beginner beaches around Tamraght are sandy, and lessons happen in shallow water with a coach close by. You wear a leash attached to your board, and the coaches give you a big, stable board for your first sessions. Coaches choose spots that match the conditions, so you never surf waves that are too big for your level.
How long should you go for?
A long weekend gives you a taste of surfing; our 4-day surf and yoga retreat is built for that. To really learn, a week is better: by day four your body has adapted and the progress comes faster. If you can, choose 7 or 8 days.
