Surf Spots in Tamraght and Nearby: A Local Guide

Tamraght has waves for every level within a few minutes of the village: sandy beach breaks for your first lessons, a right-hand point for improvers and reef breaks for confident surfers. Taghazout’s famous points are about 8 km up the road. This guide covers the spots our coaches use most, who each one suits and when it works.

How our coaches pick a spot

No single beach works every day. Swell size, swell direction, wind and tide change which spot is best, so every morning the coaches check the forecast and choose the beach that fits the conditions and the level of the group. Beginners and improvers often surf different spots on the same day.

Beginner spots in Tamraght

Devil’s Rock

Devil’s Rock is the long sandy beach that runs north from the headland of the same name. The sand bottom and soft, shifting peaks make it one of the main learning spots on this coast. It works for all levels on smaller days and is where many of our first lessons happen.

  • Type: beach break, peaks going left and right
  • Level: first-timers to improvers
  • Best: small to medium swell, most tides

Banana Beach

Banana Beach is a small bay in Tamraght, close to Banana Point. It is small and sheltered, with forgiving whitewater that is ideal for practising pop-ups when the open beaches are too big.

  • Type: protected beach break
  • Level: beginners
  • Best: days when the open beaches are too big

Spots for improvers

Banana Point

On the headland of Tamraght Bay, Banana Point is a right-hand point break that suits smaller days and can also hold decent size. When it is small, it is a good first point break: you learn to paddle into a lined-up wave and ride along it instead of straight to the beach.

Crocro

Crocro, short for Crocodiles, is the exposed beach in front of Tamraght. It picks up more swell than anywhere around, so there is a wave most days, with lefts, rights and some close-outs. In winter it can be chest to head high, which makes it a spot for surfers who already ride green waves.

K12

About 10 minutes from the village centre, K12 is technically a reef but breaks a lot like a beach break. It suits improvers and intermediates, and a bigger board helps.

Spots for intermediate and advanced surfers

The Taghazout points

A short drive north, Taghazout has the right-hand points that made this coast famous. Anchor Point is a long, powerful right that needs a solid winter swell and is for experienced surfers only. Killer Point, further north, is an expert wave. Smaller points closer to Taghazout work on gentler days. If you ride green waves confidently, our coaches take you to the one that suits the swell.

K11

South of Tamraght near Aourir, K11 is a reef break that gets steep quickly and only works on mid to high tide. It is one for experienced surfers.

Day trips: Imsouane and Anza

Imsouane, about an hour and a half north, has one of the longest right-hand waves in Africa. It peels slowly across the bay, which makes it fun for improvers and longboarders. Our 7-day surf camp and 8-day all-inclusive surf camp include a day there. South of Tamraght, Anza near Agadir has beginner peaks and reef breaks that are useful when the north is too big.

When the waves are best

From autumn to spring the Atlantic sends the most consistent swell, and the points come alive. Summer is smaller and calmer, which suits beginners. You can learn to surf here all year. For a month-by-month view, read our guide to the best time to surf in Morocco.

Respect the line-up

A few rocky breaks between Tamraght and Taghazout are surfed mostly by locals. Surf the spots that fit your level, wait your turn, and never drop in. Going with a local coach is the easiest way to get waves without stepping on anyone’s toes.
